It could be, or it could be a payment for the discomfort. As I understood it, the hair was different-- the Deities asked for that, directly.

Yes, but they did pay for the teeth, they have never cared about our discomfort before.

It is unusual. It brings up the question of whether the creatures were working on the deities' orders directly, or whether it's just their nature to take teeth and leave money.
